The Environmental Justice Center” in the Galilee Society has an opening for two positions: “Project Coordinator” and “Community Coordinator” for an EU funded project titled: “Harnessing Professional Expertise and Localized Knowledge for Collaborative Climate Resilience in Shefa-’Amr” 

Background: Climate change would inevitably affect the whole world. However, it is known that the fragile communities are the ones that are mainly harmed by its adverse effects. Therefore, the project aims at enhancing the resilience of the Arab localities in Israel to the effects of climate change through establishing a comprehensive replicable model in Shefa-’Amr. 

The specific objectives of the project are the following: 

  1. To promote the involvement of local civil society in the development of Shefa-’Amr’s climate resilience
  2. To develop inclusive governance structures and process that address the gaps in Shefa-’Amr’s resilience to climate change
  3. To develop an inclusive and comprehensive resilience strategy to adapt to climate change in Shefa-‘Amr
  4. To promote the involvement of key stakeholders in efforts to build climate resilience in the Arab community at the national level

The project is in partnership between the Galilee Society, University of Haifa and Municipality of Shefa-’Amr and funded by the EU. 

Project duration: 42 months

Starting date: 1.4.2021

Positon 1: Community Coordinator

Job description: The Community   Coordinator will be  responsible for engagement with community members, community based organizations, community leaders, and businesses in Shefa-‘Amr, including outreach and recruitment; coordinating and leading youth workshops; coordinating community events and workshops; forming, coordinating, and supporting the Climate Action Collaborative and its working groups as necessary and appropriate; connecting local stakeholders to experts and resources so that they can effectively implement climate actions; supporting the local authority Coordinator with joint local authority-community meetings, workshops, events, and initiatives; acting as a liaison between the Steering and Advisory Committee, the Climate Action Collaborative, and other local community stakeholders; supporting the University of Haifa Project Officers with the Participatory Vulnerability Assessment by recruiting participants and coordinating Participatory Vulnerability Assessment workshops, focus groups, and interviews as necessary and appropriate; supporting the University of Haifa Project Officers to gather input for the strategy/vision document; coordinating community planning sessions; developing media content relating to local community and civil society activities.

 Qualifications and Competences required and/or desire:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in social sciences
  2. Preference to nominees having a certificate in group facilitation
  3. An experience in working with public, civil society, local authorities including skills in networking, recruiting and engaging, organizing and activating public activities
  4. High organizational skills including multi-tasking and meeting tight deadlines
  5. Ability to work independently as well as with a team
  6. Sound knowledge in Microsoft Office applications

Position Type: 75% with the possibility to raise it to 100%

Location: The Galilee Society offices in Shefa’-’Amr

Position 2 : “Project Coordinator” 

Job description: The Project Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating and overseeing efforts of project staff and co-applicants; setting targets; managing the budget and reporting; ongoing monitoring and evaluation of the project; overseeing the development and contributing to project publications and media content; giving presentations/leading project events, workshops, and meetings as appropriate; overseeing the work of the Steering and Advisory Committee; and supporting the Galilee Society Advocacy Officer through participation in national-level meetings where appropriate.

Qualifications and Competencies required and/or desired: 

  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in business administration or social sciences.
  2. Demonstrated management skills, preferably in large multi-partner projects 
  3. High verbal and writing skills in Arabic, Hebrew and English
  4. Proven networking skills and experience in working with local authorities
  5. Advanced organizational skills, including multi-tasking and meeting tight deadlines 
  6. Determination and tenacity to deliver the right outcomes
  7. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  8. Sound knowledge in Microsoft Office applications.

Position 3: “Researcher”

The research will focus on adaptation to climate change in the city of Shefa-‘Amr, and building community resilience to climate change. 

Job description:

  • Leading a Participatory Vulnerability Assessment
  • Involvement in developing an inclusive and comprehensive resilience strategy and a practical guide to adaptation to climate change in Shefa-‘Amr
  • Literature review
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Engagement with residents
  • Scientific writing

Qualifications:

  • Languages: high verbal skills in Arabic– desired. High writing skills in English – required. Verbal and writing skills in Hebrew – desired
  • BA or Masters in a relevant discipline
  • Proven organizational skills, including multi-tasking and meeting tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team and with various stakeholders
  • Experience in research in social sciences – desired
  • The position includes meetings in Shefa-‘Amr
  • Interest in a PhD or a Post-doc in the project is an advantage
