  Plant of the Month

Garden Rue
Ruta chalepensis
Family: Rutaceae
Rue is a strong-smelling, somewhat bitter botanical herb, often incomparable to any other plant. Culinary uses of Rue have been documented from Ethiopia, through the Mediterranean region, to England. In Palestine, Rue is best known as an additive to storing and curing black olives. Medicinally Rue has been used to treat arthritis and eye skin diseases. Leaves and stems are immersed in olive oil and placed in the sun for up to 15 days; the oil can then be applied to the skin. An infusion of the leaves is also known to treat poisoning.

The Regional Center for Research & Development (R&D Center), a scientific-strategic project of the GS was founded in July 1995. The GS R&D Center is the first R&D Center in the Palestinian Arab community and is one of eleven R&D Centers officially recognized by and eligible for financial support from the Ministry of Science in Israel.

Palestinian scientists at the R&D Center conduct independent basic and applied research. Projects are typically community centered and are designed to study issues that arise from community needs in order to benefit the Arab community. The R&D Center maintains a clear focus on the development and enhancement of economic opportunities for the Palestinian community and also provides scientific educational opportunities for Arab students.

Since its inception, the R&D Center has maintained high levels of achievement and excellence. Research is undertaken in cooperation with local, regional and international research institutes and universities on issues related to water conservation, environmental health, agriculture and medicinal herbs
